Spooky But Silly Halloween Show Returns!

Posted: September 25, 2016

You won’t want to miss the wild and crazy antics of Checkers when he visits the library with his Halloween Magic Show on Saturday, October 15, at 1:00 PM.

From the youngest to oldest, audience members will be treated to lots of silly tricks (including juggling, Halloween magic, and the giant pumpkin balloon dive) during this 5th performance by Checkers at our library!  (brother Charlie is away at school!)

And Speaking of School . . .

Students, parents, and teachers, we wish you a successful new school year!  Please call on us for help any time!  We can provide many books you’re looking for from our own collection, or can easily obtain them free of charge for you from other libraries!

To obtain the most accurate material for your research, skip Google and go to www.nioga.org, the home page of our Nioga Library System.  Look for “Readers Services” in the middle of the page, and click on “Online Databases.

How will a database help you?  If you need the most current and reliable information on a topic, especially information not likely to be found in books or not quickly attainable in books, this is where a database, or index to authoritative articles gathered from journals, magazines, and newspapers, will be extremely helpful.  In the case of most of the databases available through the Nioga site, you can easily read the full text of each article.  It can then be saved or printed, and you also have correct citation information at your fingertips.  There are databases just for young learners, too, including InfoBits for Kids and various encyclopedias.

There’s much more to explore on the Nioga homepage (tutorials and links to get ebooks, streaming movies, music, comics, stories and games for kids; you will need to be a registered borrower at your public library and set up a PIN as well to use these).  Have a look!

Tell Us Your Computer Training Needs!

Posted: September 25, 2016

Our library has hosted 19 varied computer training classes since 2011, provided FREE by a friendly, professional computer trainer of the Nioga Library System.

It’s been a few years since the library surveyed the public on which computer classes would be most helpful to them.  Currently there are 20 different classes available, including Internet Basic, Excel and Word Basic and Intermediate, Skills for Job Seekers, and Flash Drives and File Management.  Instructor Sara Taylor makes these classes enjoyable and stress-free!  Please stop by or call the library to let us know which classes would best suit you.

For a complete list, go to www.btopexpress.org and choose Courses and Resources along the top, then scroll down page to Courses.

Thank You to These Library Supporters, Our Friends and Neighbors

For the second year, Ward and Sheila Dobbins have made a significant monetary donation to the library, intended to benefit the entire community we serve.   The library trustees, staff, and all who use the library wish to express our sincere gratitude for their generosity!  Because of this gift, the library will be able to provide a wider variety of materials for use by all in the community.

Mr. Dobbins, owner of H. H. Dobbins apple packing and sales company in Lyndonville, was also recently named Business Person of the Year by the Orleans County Chamber of Commerce. The award recognizes him among others in a select group for “their work to build a stronger community.”
